what we read this year
We read fewer books this year than last year, but I think we averaged longer books. Some surprising notables we recommend were Ratscalibur and Flora and Ulysses.
We ended up re-reading several books, by popular request. They included:
- Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (aka, when Fudge has to "eat it or wear it". We're very sad that the library no longer has this one in the ebranch. We'll have to buy the Fudge series one day.)
- The BFG (which we had to read again before watching the movie)
- The Mouse and the Motorcycle
- The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Basil
New books we read this year:
- The Phantom Tollbooth (a journey through a ridiculous land full of word play)
- Fudge-a-Mania
- The Chronicles of Narnia (all 7 books)
- Ratscalibur (a retelling of several epic tales combined, centered on a boy who is turned into a rat)
- Flora and Ulysses (a combination of text and graphic novel, about a girl and a superhero squirrel - boys can enjoy reading books with main characters who are girls!)
- The One and Only Ivan (narrated by Ivan, mighty silverback)
- Rufus M. (we didn't like this one much and didn't finish it)
- The Sea of Monsters (We have not read any other Percy Jackson books, but the library only had this one. It was exciting, though the mythology was a little complicated for the boys.)
- The Lost Treasure of Tuckernuck (Unlikely friends team up on a treasure hunt, following clues in their historic school.)
- The Book of the King (book 1 of a kid-saves-the-world kind of adventure series)
Currently, we're reading The Search for South Pole Santa, which was free for Kindle, and the boys wanted to read something about Santa. I think we like it so far. A Christmas Carol is on our list for the end of the year again. I have Firestar's Quest flagged in the library to borrow after our Christmas books. For Christmas, the boys were given Runaway Ralph, Ralph S Mouse (both sequels to The Mouse and the Motorcycle), and Danger on Midnight River (part of a Gary Paulsen series, found randomly at our supermarket).
